What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store, so it can recognise something on your next request. Websites also use similar technologies — local storage and session storage — which do much the same job. UK law treats them the same way, so we list all of them here and call them all "cookies" for simplicity.
The rule under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations is straightforward: a website may store what is strictly necessary to provide the service you asked for, and needs your consent for anything else. That is exactly how this site behaves.
Strictly necessary — always on
These are needed for the site to work. They cannot be switched off, and they do not require your consent, but you are entitled to know what they are.

We want to be straight with you about a judgement we have made. The
pal_adviser entry exists because you chose a particular adviser
— usually by following their link — and continuity with that person is the
service you asked for. It lasts only as long as your browser tab, holds no
information about you, is never read by any other website, and is not used
to build a profile or target advertising. On that basis we treat it as
strictly necessary rather than asking you to consent to it.
If you would rather it were not there, closing the tab removes it, and browsing in a private window prevents it. If you think we have got this judgement wrong, tell us — the reasoning is published precisely so it can be challenged.
Analytics — off unless you agree
Analytics cookies would tell us which pages people read, which they leave quickly, and whether the tools on the site are actually used. That is genuinely how a site gets better. But it is not necessary for the site to work, so it is off until you say yes.

If you do not consent to analytics, the Google script is never loaded at all — not loaded-but-blocked. Nothing about your visit is measured or sent anywhere.
Google may transfer analytics data outside the UK. Where it does, the transfer relies on the safeguards described in our Privacy Policy. You can read Google's own explanation of how it handles this data at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Marketing — none in use
We do not currently use any marketing, advertising or social-media tracking cookies. There is no advertising pixel on this site.
The switch for marketing appears in your cookie settings so that the position is transparent and so that, if we ever do add one, it starts in the off position and stays there until you turn it on. We would also update this page and re-ask everyone for their choice.
Third-party content on this site
Two things on this site come from outside it, so it is fair to tell you:
- Google Fonts — the site's typeface, Archivo, is loaded from Google's font service. This does not set a cookie, but it does mean your browser makes a request to Google, which will see your IP address.
- Links out to other websites — including WhatsApp, the FCA register, the Ombudsman and the ICO. Once you follow a link, that website's own cookie rules apply and ours stop. We have no control over, and take no responsibility for, what other sites do.
We deliberately do not embed YouTube videos, social feeds, live-chat widgets, review widgets or map iframes, because each of those would load third-party tracking into a page about your finances. If we add anything of that kind, it will be behind your consent and listed here first.
How to control cookies
On this site
Open cookie settings to change your choice at any time. Turning analytics off takes effect immediately for anything further; to remove cookies already set, clear them in your browser using the links below.
In your browser
Your browser can block or delete cookies from all sites. This affects every website you use, and blocking all cookies breaks a great many of them.
Most browsers also offer a private or incognito window, which discards all storage when you close it. That is the simplest way to browse this site leaving nothing behind at all.
Opting out of Google Analytics everywhere
Google publishes a browser add-on that prevents Google Analytics on every site you visit: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track
We honour the Global Privacy Control signal: if your browser or extension sends one, we treat it as a refusal of analytics and marketing cookies, and you will not be asked again while it is set.
The older Do Not Track header has no agreed meaning and is not consistently implemented, so we do not rely on it. Use your cookie settings on this page, or Global Privacy Control, and your choice will be respected.
Changes to this policy
If we add a new cookie or change what an existing one does, we will update this page and ask you for your choice again rather than assuming your previous consent still covers it. The date of the last review is at the top and bottom of this page.
